- Animals such as cats metabolize essential oils very differently than humans. And with a much stronger and more acute sense of smell than humans, animals are more affected by essential oil inhalation than one might think. With that said, due to Eucalyptus essential oil’s many precautions toward cats, we don’t recommend using this oil around your pet. If you’ve already used Eucalyptus essential oil around your cat and if you notice behavioral differences, such as whining, scratching or acting loopy, move your cat to fresh air and contact your veterinarian. If you wish to use Eucalyptus essential oil without affecting your cat, inhale it using an Essential Oil Inhaler and Mio Mist Diffuser or use it topically.
- Essential oils are powerful, concentrated substances so a little goes a long way. Two of the most effective ways to use them is by way of inhalation and topical use. Ingesting Eucalyptus essential oil is rarely necessary or recommended, no matter the brand. Ingestion can lead to adverse reactions such as medication contraindications, mucous membrane irritation, sensitization and nausea if done incorrectly. Therefore, if you wish to take essential oils internally, we strongly recommend consulting with a knowledgeable professional with experience in internal use.
- Due to its content of the component 1,8 cineole, this oil is contraindicated for children under the age of 10. According to Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, “1,8 Cineole has been reported to cause CNS and breathing problems in young children.” For this reason, we don’t recommend using Eucalyptus essential oil on or around young children. We recommend a gentler Eucalyptus oil variety such as Eucalyptus- Dives or Eucalyptus- Lemon for children over the age of 5.
- Eucalyptus smithii is the mellowest and softest of all Eucalyptus species and the essential oil has all of the same camphorous and healthy attributes of its cousins. As far as killing germs, all of the Eucalyptus essential oil varieties have a natural fortitude as an antibacterial and disinfectant and its antimicrobial activities are perfect for cleaning. If you like to make your own DIY cleaning products, Eucalyptus smithii comes in handy for those who want a mellower and less overpowering aroma. It is also ideal for ridding your home or work environment from unwanted odors.
- Eucalyptus essential oil varieties have been found to repel a number of insects. In particular, Lemon Eucalyptus contains the component Citronellol. This component as well as others found in the oil is considered to be one among a number of essential oils that can be used as natural plant based insect repellents. It has been shown to be effective not only against black flies but can also repel mosquitoes, midges, ticks, gnats and fleas. According to eHow, “Flies do not like the smell of eucalyptus oil, and thus tend to stay away from it. Lemon eucalyptus, in particular, is thought to repel flies by also confusing them, because it masks the carbon dioxide and lactic acid naturally emitted by humans.”
