- Damiana essential oil is good for a variety of everyday purposes. It contains a significant amount of a natural constituent called 1,8- cineole which has been studied for its ability to support the respiratory system and reduce congestion. Damiana’s sweet and floral aroma also makes it a natural mood booster and stress reliever. Historically, Damiana was used as an aphrodisiac to boost libido. Finally, its unique aroma makes it a welcome addition to sophisticated essential oil blends and high-end fragrances.
- Native to Central and South America, Damiana oil is produced from the flowers and leaves of the damiana herb (Turnera diffusa) – a plant with an exotic history. While this herb’s lore is often associated with its history of use in potions to arouse passion, it is more recently associated with its use as an ingredient in Mexican liqueurs, tonics and herbal teas. Mexican folklore claims that herbal infusions of Damiana were key components in the "original" margaritas. Its aroma is unique: pungent, bitter-sweet and floral with some similarities to Chamomile. When diluted, it is a wondrous element in massage oil and is well suited for intimacy and celebratory occasions.
- The Damina herb is steam distilled to produce 100% pure essential oil which is beneficial for a variety of health conditions. Its sweet, soothing aroma helps to reduce feelings of anxiousness when diffused and inhaled. Damiana oil has also been known to alleviate headache and neck tension. When used in a massage, it can enhance sensuality and sexual desire. Its versatility makes it a worthy addition to your aromatherapy arsenal.
- Throughout history, Damiana has been revered for its natural aphrodisiac properties. Even today, Damiana is found in formulations that assist with erectile dysfunction, low libido and other sexual dysfunctions. Damiana essential oil was also formulated into our Aphrodisiac essential oil blend for this reason. To use Damiana, we suggest diluting 18 drops of it in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Light some candles and use this oil in a romantic massage for your partner.
- The way you use Damiana essential oil can affect how quickly it works. Additionally, the purpose you’re addressing by using Damina must also be considered. Inhalation is one of the fastest methods of absorbing essential oils into the bloodstream. This method of application is recommended for respiratory issues, mood, headaches, sleep, energy and focus. Topical use of essential oils on the skin allows essential oil to enter the bloodstream slower, which is recommended if you’re applying the oil to areas of inflammation, scrapes, minor burns, wrinkles, scars and other areas of concern.
- Damaina essential oil is safe to use when proper safety guidelines are followed. When using Damiana oil topically, we always recommend diluting it beforehand to prevent skin irritation. Because of its high concentration, only a little is needed to be diffused. We recommend diffusing 10 - 15 drops per 100 ml of water. Because babies are more sensitive to essential oils and don’t metabolize them as well as adults, we do not recommend using Damiana oil around children under 2 years old.
- Damiana’s sweet, floral, fruity and bright aroma makes it an excellent addition to other blends. This highly versatile oil blends well with citruses such as Lemon, Lime, Yuzu and Clementine as well as florals such as Rose, Lavender and Ylang Ylang. One of our favorite sweet and floral DIY diffuser blends is a combination of 2 drops Patchouli, 1 drop Damiana and 1 drop Ylang Ylang. Add this blend to your essential oil diffuser for a cheerful atmosphere.
- Several essential oils offer similar benefits to Rosemary and can act as a substitute for Rosemary oil. For respiratory support, use Damiana, Eucalyptus, Cajeput, Peppermint or Tea Tree oil. To promote hair growth, reach for Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Lavender oil. For memory and focus, use Peppermint, Spike Lavender or Sage. If you’re looking to use Rosemary for its herbal aroma, you may also like Sage, Basil, Thyme or Cilantro.
- Davana has a sweet, fruity and uplifting aroma. Many people have likened its aroma to watermelon or fruit salad. In perfumery, Davana is often paired with florals such as Rose, Magnolia and Osmanthus. For a fun and uplifting DIY diffuser blend, combine 3 drops Bergamot, 2 drops Davana, 2 drops Lime and 1 drop Ylang Ylang in your essential oil diffuser.
- Damiana has been touted by many as having a hallucinogenic effect. However, there is no evidence to support these claims. Still, Damiana is a natural mood enhancer that can reduce stress, alleviate headaches and support mental health. To use Damiana for these purposes, add 10 drops to your essential oil diffuser per 100 ml of water.
- Damiana essential oil does not have adverse side effects when following proper essential oil safety guidelines. For example, due to its concentrated nature, a little Damiana oil goes a long way. For this reason, we recommend diluting Damiana oil prior to topical use. If using Damiana oil in an essential oil diffuser, we suggest only using about 10 drops per every 100 ml of water. Furthermore, when diffusing ensure that there is adequate ventilation.
- Damiana essential oil’s soothing aroma makes it a great oil for alleviating feelings of anxiety. It is especially helpful for anxiety relief when paired with other soothing essential oils such as Lavender oil, Clary Sage, Sweet Marjoram and Patchouli. To create your own soothing essential oil blend, add 4 drops Lavender, 3 drops Sweet Orange and 3 drops Damiana to your essential oil diffuser. Diffuse to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Alternatively, add this blend to an Essential Oil Inhaler and carry with you throughout the day.
