Frequently Asked Questions
What is Indian Sandalwood essential oil good for?
  • Dating back thousands of years, Sandalwood has been used for perfumery, religious ceremonies and more. Sandalwood essential oil offers the benefits from enduring presence to nurture the body energy and emotional state it helps to relieve stress and anxiety. It offers calmness and inner peace to one's emotional state and pairs well for meditation blends. Sandalwood contains antioxidants that can moisturize and help to maintain the structure of skin cells which is why it's used in skin blends for purifying skin imperfections and moisturizing dry skin and dry hair. It also proves itself worthy in a blend to stop a sore throat in its tracks when paired with oils such as Lavender, Lemon, Tea Tree, Rosemary and Oregano.
What is East Indian Sandalwood?
  • Sandalwood is a very important oil in aromatherapy. Santalum album, aka East Indian Sandalwood, is the chemotype of sandalwood that grows in India. The oil is extracted from the heartwood of the tree. Young trees are not pungent enough to harvest and the oils are generally sustainably harvested from trees that are between 20-60 years old. Due to this and its desireable nature in modern life, Sandalwood trees are a threatened species and its cost shows how valuable it is.
Which type of Sandalwood essential oil is best?
  • The debate is out on which Sandalwood is best. Outside of the luxurious aromatics of Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album), there is Sandalwood- Hawaiian (Santalum paniculatum) and Sandalwood- Australian (Santalum spicatum). The difference is really in the price with East Indian Sandalwood being the most costly. Sandalwood- Hawaiian has the same content of alpha and beta santalol, making it a less costly cousin. Australian Sandalwood has a lower santalol, giving it a different therapeutic value and a woodier aroma. So if you are looking to save a little money but would like the same chemical profile, Hawaiian Sandalwood makes a great substitute.
What blends well with Sandalwood essential oil?
  • As a base note, Sandalwood pairs well with many other essential oils. Other wood oils such as Cedarwood and Rosewood and base oils such as Vetiver work incredibly well in blends for sleep and calming the mind. Resins such as Frankincense and Myrrh for their warmth and comfort. For a touch of lively beauty and if you like florals, try it with Rose, Geranium, Jasmine or Lavender. Citrus gives Sandalwood a fruity twist with choices of Bergamot, Orange- Sweet and Lemon. Herbal oils can also integrate well in blends with Sandalwood and a few good choices are Marjoram- Sweet and Rosemary.
What is a good substitute for Sandalwood essential oil?
  • To substitute Sandalwood essential oil, one place to start would be to look into base note oils such as Vetiver, Frankincense, Myrrh and Cedarwood or Patchouli. They have similar emotionally calming and anxiety relief properties as Sandalwood. However, if you are looking to emulate the aromatics of Sandalwood, try Amyris which has a similar profile to Sandalwood and a sandalwood-like aromatic. Amyris is substantially less costly and its often found as an adulterant in Sandalwood essential oil for products such as soaps, incense and candles.

Amazing scent. Horrible bottle

This oil is extremely viscous. I did not know this and upon purchase was really upset that I could not get a single drop out of it. I emailed EG support and was told to prick the dropper and warm the oil in my hands. Even then it had no luck I finally had to remove the dropper inside and pour it myself. Because it's very viscous, I, thankfully, did not spill any and one drop into the diffuser with one drop absolute jasmine was perfection. 5/5 for the scent. However, they need to be more forthcoming about the products viscosity and provide a different dropper.

Smells great

This is my first time using sandalwood and I'm glad I tried it. It smells so good. I use a tiny amount in my moisturizer. A little goes a long way so I think I'll get a nice long good use out of it. I haven't compared it to other oils but it seems to be good quality to me.

Thick

This oil smells different than I thought it would, not very strong. Also, having a very difficult time getting it out of the bottle, either drip or shaking.
