Frequently Asked Questions
What is Myrrh essential oil good for?
  • Myrrh, known by its Latin derivative, Commiphora myrrha, has an incredible ability to heal and rejuvenate skin by adding moisture and healing scars. It's been touted for its use in cosmetics and skincare products to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Try it also to help calm reddened skin and acne breakouts in a DIY skin cleanser. Due to its anti-inflammatory and calming properties, it's a perfect oil to use for meditation, staying grounded, evening mood and being in the moment. Added to blends for cold and flu, its properties as antibacterial and antimicrobial, Myrrh acts as a great support for respiratory ailments such as bronchitis by helping to loosen phlegm. It also has a calming effect relieving stress. As a base note, it has a long life lasting in cool, dark conditions for up to 8 years.
Is Myrrh essential oil thick?
  • Resin oils tend to be thick and viscous due to the nature of its origin as the sap from a tree. After steam distillation, the resultant oil has a thick consistency and ranges in color from dark yellow to amber and dark brown. It can get sticky as well and bottles may be difficult to open if myrrh oil drips around the closure of the bottle. Be sure to wipe up any droplets before recapping.
Is Myrrh essential oil safe for dogs?
  • Animals, including dogs, metabolize essential oils differently than humans. Certain essential oils are not safe for use around dogs because they’ve been shown to produce negative side effects. If you decide to diffuse Lemongrass ensure proper ventilation and that your dog is free to leave the room if desired. That being said, puppies and dogs with health conditions may be too sensitive to essential oil exposure. We also do not recommend topical or oral application of essential oils unless advised by an animal aromatherapist. To understand a little more about safe oils for dogs, read this blog post.
How to use Myrrh essential oil for skin?
  • Due to its astringent properties, Myrrh is great to use in facial toners. Try blending it with Lavender and even a little Carrot Seed Oil in a little witch hazel and Lavender or Myrrh hydrosol. This toner is great for aging and wrinkles as well - explore blending it with a few drops of Palmarosa and Frankincense in a hydrosol. You can also use it in a cleansing face wash by blending it with other skin savvy essential oils, a small amount of witch hazel and Castille soap. Or make yourself a DIY facial oil with a carrier oil such as Hemp Seed Oil or cold pressed Avocado Oil.
Is Myrrh essential oil safe during pregnancy?
  • According to Tisserand, Myrrh due to its elements β-elemene and furanodiene, are antiangiogenic and potentially fetotoxic. These properties of Myrrh can cause a reduction in the growth of new blood vessels. Therefore, Myrrh is contraindicated for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Whether or not the properties are able to cross the fetal placental border during gestation, we suggest avoiding the use of Myrrh during pregnancy and lactation.
