  • Lemon Eucalyptus has an exotic and captivating aromatic. Its fresh like its sister eucalyptus oils but with a twist of camphor and lemon citrus due to the component citronellol. Eucalyptus citriodora, is steam distilled from tree of this ornamental whose bark is dimpled with gray pink and white. Historically, its leaves were used in cupboards to keep bugs away. This oil has most of the same therapeutic qualities as the other Eucalyptus tree which are analgesic, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, breathing and respiratory aid, improves immunity, but its sweeter fragrance makes it a gem in DIY cleaning products to fight against microbes.
Is Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil safe for dogs?
  • Animals such as dogs metabolize essential oils very differently than humans. If choosing to use Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil around your dog, it’s important to look out for warning signs such as behavioral differences, such as whining, scratching or acting loopy. Stop using essential oils around your dog if you notice these signs, and don’t use essential oils around small dogs, puppies and pregnant dogs. We don’t recommend applying essential oils to your pup or administering oils orally without consulting a holistic veterinarian. You may diffuse small amounts of oil around your dog, but be sure to do so in a well-ventilated room where your dog can leave if desired.
How to make Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil?
  • Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil, by its Latin name, Eucalyptus citriodora, is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
Does Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil repel flies?
  • Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil contains the component Citronellol. This component as well as others found in the oil is considered to be one among a number of essential oils that can be used as natural plant based insect repellents. It has been shown to be effective not only against black flies but can also repel mosquitoes, midges, ticks, gnats and fleas. According to eHow, “Flies do not like the smell of eucalyptus oil, and thus tend to stay away from it. Lemon eucalyptus, in particular, is thought to repel flies by also confusing them, because it masks the carbon dioxide and lactic acid naturally emitted by humans.”
Is Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil phototoxic?
  • Certain essential oils contain natural components known as furanocoumarins. This is more common in citrus essential oils but does occur in other oils as well such as Angelica Root. Furanocoumarins cause essential oils to be phototoxic, meaning the oil can cause burns and skin irritation if sun and UV light exposure occur. Not all citrus-sounding essential oils are phototoxic, however, including Lemon Eucalyptus. Therefore, this oil can safely be worn in the sun so long as it’s properly diluted.
