- There are several ways to effectively use Caraway essential oil and obtain its benefits, including 1.) Add 10 drops to your essential oil diffuser per 100 ml of water. 2.) Add 10 drops to an Essential Oil Inhaler and take it with you for on-the-go therapeutic use. 3.) Create a spray by combining 20 drops Caraway and 1 tablespoon 190-proof grain alcohol in a glass spray bottle. After a few hours, add 3 tablespoons of distilled water. Spray onto surfaces and in the air to refresh your space.
- Caraway has traditionally been used as a carminative in blends to aid digestion, relieve bloating, improve a loss of appetite and ease heartburn. It has a warm disposition and in studies it has been found to help with colitis and IBS best used in topical skin applications as an abdominal massage oil. Caraway has properties that reduce inflammation, ease spasm, kill microbes, is antioxidant, and has immune boosting effects. It can also be used in blends for relief of the respiratory system and ease a spastic cough.
- Caraway essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Caraway essential oil at home without a still, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
- Herbaceous and bittersweet with woody notes that is reminiscent of rye bread. It carries with it hints of floral and spice. Caraway essential oil is steam diestiled from the seeds of the plant and is nearly colorless to a pale yellow. It is a middle note which helps to carry and give direction to a blend where it offers its warm confidence and eases emotional fatigue.
- Essential oils are powerful, concentrated substances so a little goes a long way. Two of the most effective ways to use them are by way of inhalation and topical use. Ingesting Caraway essential oil is not the optimal way to achieve its benefits as it lacks nutrients found in the whole seeds. What’s more, the essential oil is often far more expensive than the seeds that produce it. Therefore, we recommend using caraway seeds in cooking rather than essential oil.
