Frequently Asked Questions
How to make Magnolia essential oil?
  • Magnolia essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Magnolia essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
What does Magnolia essential oil smell like?
  • Magnolia essential oil has a somewhat exotic and sublime aroma that is sweet and fruity. The oil is cultivated in China and made by steam distilling the flowers. It’s a middle note and in a blend the aroma emerges after the top notes evaporate, giving a blend its fullness and body which is sometimes considered the heart of the blend. The soft floral aromatics are fresh and uplifting which help to relieve symptoms of anxiety and lead an opening for relaxation.
What is Magnolia essential oil good for?
  • Magnolia carries a chemical makeup of approximately 65% linalool giving it a leg up when it comes to issues of the skin helping to reduce skin irritation and inflammation such as redness and puffiness leaving the skin luminous as it moisturizes. Its uplifting aroma can help to relieve symptoms of anxiety and lead an opening for relaxation. Other therapeutic benefits are increased circulation which can help PMS symptoms and sedative actions which can promote and regulate sleep. It also may support a blend for those with respiratory issues that may arise from allergies.
Is Magnolia essential oil safe for kids?
  • Magnolia is a safe oil to use for kids over the age of 2. When using this oil with young children, it is recommended to use in blends at very low dilutions. To understand more about how to dilute essential oils with children, please refer to our dilution guide and you can read more about our OK For Kids line.
What to blend with Magnolia essential oil?
  • Magnolia blends easily with floral oils for a luxurious perfume or for inflamed skin blends such as Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Melissa and Neroli. Citrus oils can complement its floral exotic aromatic and add a bit of liveliness such as Bergamot, Lemon, Grapefruit and Wild Orange. Base notes will help fix the aroma of a blend and wood oils would compliment the florals such as Sandalwood and Vetiver.

Love this oil

When I first diffused Magnolia oil, I wasn’t a fan of the smell. However, after a few weeks I have grown to love it! This oil has a perfect balance between earthy and sweet notes and is a great addition to my oil collection.

Absolutely the best. It’s definitely hard to find a good true magnolia- living with a magnolia tree in the yard makes it harder to settle. And this is the closest I’ve ever found to the real thing

Quite Strong but good for circulation

The smell itself is quite strong and not my favorite but maybe I just need to get used to it, my husband quite likes it. I find it good for adding to a hot foot soak for circulation.

Smells like a bouquet of flowers

I already knew that I loved the scent of Magnolia Essential Oil when I ordered this. Magnolia is my favorite floral essential oil, although I also love Rose Essential Oil. Magnolia has always smelled complex to me, almost like several flowers at once! As others say, the initial scent is strong and not as pleasant as the scent that you get after it has been on your skin for some time. I dilute it to appropriate/safe levels in lotion, and that smells wonderful! I make a blend that I love with Magnolia Essential Oil, Sweet/Wild Orange Essential Oil, Vanilla Oleoresin, and a tiny amount of Vetiver & Texas Cedarwood. (As a side note, Atlas Cedarwood is endangered, so if there is another Cedarwood you enjoy, I would recommend using that Cedarwood over Atlas Cedarwood. I personally like Texas Cedarwood.)
