- nimals such as dogs metabolize essential oils very differently than humans. And with a sense of smell 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than humans, animals are more affected by essential oil diffusion than one might think. With that said, due to Douglas Fir essential oil’s many precautions toward dogs, we don’t recommend using this oil around your dog. If you’ve already used Douglas Fir essential oil around your dog and if you notice behavioral differences, such as whining, scratching or acting loopy, move your dog to fresh air and contact your veterinarian. If you wish to use Douglas Fir essential oil without affecting your dog, inhale it using an Essential Oil Inhaler and Mio Mist Diffuser or use it topically.
- Douglas Fir uses the Latin binomial, Pseudotsuga menziesii. It is a top note that hits the nose immediately in a blend and has chemical components that aid clear breathing, reduces congestion, helps to curtail fatigue and is anti-inflammatory. Its antiseptic abilities are superb for cleaning blends added to unscented soaps and hand sanitizers. For use in a diffuser it will dispense in a home or workspace a fresh, sweet, lemony and coniferous aromatic. It is excellent for the emotional issues offering its uplifting support and can transform the mood in a room.
- Douglas Fir also goes by the name Douglas Pine. It carries the Latin name, Pseudotsuga menziesii. These two natural oils are one in the same and it offers the ability to aid emotions by uplifting and stabilizing moods. Its a-pinene, b-pinene, sabinene and d-3-carene content are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial. Its other attributes are extended for the physical body with pain relief, antispasmodic and immunostimulant properties.
- Taking a look at the main components of Douglas Fir and comparing them to other essential oils with the same chemical components will help us find a suitable substitute for Douglas Fir. Douglas Fir has a-pinene, b-pinene, Sabinene and d-3-carene. Another oil that has similar but not exact properties is Black Spruce essential oil. Its aromatics will be slightly different but Black Spruce is a fantastic oil for opening breath and calming the mind.
- Like most people you love, you may be prone to give babies the very best of everything — essential oils included. But due to their heightened sensitivities, we suggest using essential oils of all brands infrequently (if at all) on children younger than two years old. The consequences of misusing essential oils with children and babies, unfortunately, range from severe to dire. It’s also important to note that diluted oils, let alone essential oils in their pure forms can be overwhelming for babies, as their metabolisms are underdeveloped. If you do choose to use essential oils with your baby, check with your child’s pediatrician before use.

HOLIDAY: Douglas Fir may have a characteristic “Christmas tree” aroma. Add Douglas Fir to a diffuser during the holidays, or drop onto ornaments to scent artificial trees. Alternatively, add 1 drop Douglas Fir and 1 drop Cinnamon Leaf to the inside of a paper bag and place holiday cards in bag. Let sit overnight to scent cards.
INHALATION: Add the following to a 5ml amber glass bottle: 40 drops Douglas Fir, 30 drops Blood Orange, 25 drops Thyme and 20 drops Eucalyptus Smithii. Shake to mix well. Fill a bowl with steamy water; add to the bowl 2 drops of the essential oil mixture, covering your head and bowl with a towel to keep the steam in. Inhale through your nose, with eyes closed. Breathe in the vapors for five minutes, or as desired.
AWAKE: Add 5 drops Douglas Fir, 3 drops Tangerine and 2 drops Pink Pepper to a personal inhaler. Inhale throughout the day.
MASSAGE: Blend 7 drops Douglas Fir, 7 drops Lavender (Greek) and 4 drops Pink Pepper in 1 oz of Cucumber carrier oil. Massage shoulders, feet, hands and legs after a long day.
