Are you tired of acne or blemishes?

Whether your flare-ups are due to allergies, hormones, the season, or your skin type, there’s a better, more natural way to clear up your skin—one that doesn’t rely on expensive skincare products.

We speak, of course, about essential oils.

But what essential oils are good for acne-prone skin? Whether you have dry skin, oily skin or combination skin, let’s review.

The Top 10 Essential Oils for Pimples

The most common form of acne is the result of hormones, dead skin, skin oil (sebum), and ingrown hairs clogging up your pores.

When you have clogged pores, they can turn into a hotbed for all types of acne causing bacteria, specifically propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria. Eventually, that can turn into pimples and blemishes.

Using topicals that dry out or kill bacteria on the surface of your skin is the most effective way to combat acne. This brings us to the benefits of essential oils and which are best for acne-prone skin.

  • Tea Tree Essential Oil – Derived from the melaleuca tree, Tea Tree essential oil is considered to be one of the most powerful essential oils for treating acne prone skin. This is why it’s been used in skin cleaning remedies for centuries. A powerful antiseptic, studies have shown that it helps dry out bacteria, causing pimples to vanish. However, because it is so effective, use it sparingly and then follow up with a moisturizer.

  • Skin Love Synergy Blend –  Formulated with ultra healing essential oils like Frankincense oil, Sandalwood oil and Lavender oil, Skin Love synergy blend can boost cell regeneration which helps prevent acne scarring and long term damage to the skin. It can also help calm acne and shrink the appearance of older acne scars over time.

  • Thyme Essential Oil – Although you’re probably more familiar with the herb for cooking, Thyme essential oil has chemical properties that can effectively counteract bacteria and inflammation.

  • Lemon Essential Oil – Chock full of antioxidants, Lemon essential oil’s astringent properties helps you unclog your pores and gently exfoliate dead skin cells. This promotes skin healing and prevents further acne breakouts.

  • Carrot Seed Essential Oil – Ideal for spot treatments of pimples that have already surfaced, Carrot Seed EO can help dry out blemishes without drying out the surrounding skin.

  • Manuka Essential Oil – Antioxidant compounds in Manuka can help prevent inflammation. This makes it a possible way to reduce inflammatory acne like pustules and cysts.

  • Rosemary Essential Oil – One of the most effective ways to combat acne is by preventing skin conditions from occurring. Rosemary essential oil helps manage sebum production, which means your skin can become less oily. As a natural anti-inflammatory, it also helps reduce skin irritation caused by breakouts.

  • Lemongrass Essential Oil – Lemongrass is an antimicrobial with naturally astringent properties. It helps dry out pimples.

  • Bergamot Essential Oil – As a citrus-derived essential oil, Bergamot not only smells fantastic but also can help improve your skin's clarity and health. It can help reduce inflammation, which can lead to less swelling and pimple shrinkage.

  • Sandalwood Essential Oil – Sandalwood is one of the most nourishing essential oils you can use on your skin, which is why it’s a popular component in many face washes and shaving creams. It’s a gentle healer that can help fight bacteria that causes skin flare-ups. Additionally, it can help prevent pimples from developing into pustules or papules.

Combating Acne Using Essential Oils

So, now that you know about some of the best essential oils for acne, it’s time to discuss how to apply them properly. The following are the two primary methods you can try:

Spot Treatment

There are three types of acne that you’ve likely dealt with at one time or another. Because they have different causes and qualities, how you treat them will differ:

1. Blackheads & Whiteheads (comedones) – When comedones (enlarged hair follicles filled with sebum) push through the skin’s surface, it creates a blackhead and when it doesn’t it creates a whitehead. To clear blackheads and whiteheads using essential oils take the following steps:
  • Make a facial gel by combining 4 drops Skin Love Synergy Blend with 2 tsp 190 proof alcohol, then stir into 4 tsp of aloe vera gel.

  • After washing your face, take a dollop of the gel and apply it to your face, paying special attention to blackheads and whiteheads.

  • Let the product sit overnight and then wash your face in the morning.

  • This product should last 1-2 weeks with refrigeration.

2. Pimples
– Pimples occur when hair follicles become infected. Infection-fighting cells are attracted to the site, leading to redness and eventually causing the pimple to rupture. To help clear pimples using essential oils take the following steps:
  • Create a skincare serum by combining 3 drops Basil essential oil, 3 drops Sweet Orange and 1 oz of Apricot Kernel carrier oil.

  • Add a drop of the serum to a q-tip and apply to pimples twice a day, daily.

  • Once the pimple has gone, follow up with a 1% dilution of Lavender- Greek essential oil to avoid scarring.

3. Nodules & Cysts – These are deeper infections that extend further into the skin, creating large bumps, swelling and redness. They get deep down into the skin, which makes treating them much more difficult. You have to be patient and careful to avoid exacerbating the flare-up. To help clear nodules and cysts try using this essential oils recipe:
  • Make a toner combining 3 drops of Tea Tree oil and 2 tsp 190 proof alcohol, then add to 4 tsp of distilled water in a spray bottle.

  • After washing your face, spray onto a clean cotton pad and dab your face, paying attention to acne spots.

  • Let the product stay on your face and work overnight. Clean it off the following morning.

  • This product should last 1-2 weeks with refrigeration.

Face Steams

Essential oils for face steam can be a simple home remedy that can help cleanse and rejuvenate your skin. Doing so can help prevent acne from flaring up and fight acne that’s already present.

To begin, follow these steps:

  1. Cleanse your face.

  2. Fill up a medium-sized pot with water and bring it to a simmer.

  3. Pour water into a heat-safe bowl.

  4. Add two drops of essential oil and stir the water.

  5. Closing your eyes, cover both your head and the bowl with a towel to trap in the steam.

  6. Sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

Simple, right?

I purchased the skin love blend and am hoping to use it as an acne treatment. Your recipe calls for 190 proof alcohol. Can you recommend a brand so I know I’m purchasing the correct product?
