How You Can Use Essential Oils In The Shower
What’s your favorite way to use essential oils?
From homemade bathroom cleaner to homemade floor cleaner, many of our customers find that integrating essential oils into their daily routines helps better their lives, naturally. Yet we know it can often be hard to find time for a soothing bedtime aromatherapy session—much less an at-home spa day!
That’s why we love using essential oils in the shower to enjoy their beneficial effects while getting ready for the day ahead or putting the day behind us.
Wondering how to use essential oils in the shower? From shower bombs (they're like a bath bomb!) shower melts or a shower steamer, there are so many great ways to use essential oils in the shower. In this short guide, we’ll go over our favorite methods for relaxing and recharging with uplifting aromas.
Add Essential Oils To Your Body Wash & Hair Products
No matter how short your shower, you’re going to use soap. That’s why putting essential oils in body wash and other shower products can be so effective.
We recommend diluting your natural essential oils at a ratio of 3% to 5% for topical application. To figure out the perfect amount of essential oil for your body wash, take a look at the label. Then, add 18-30 drops per 1 oz of body wash. Note here that we recommend using a body wash base that’s meant to have additional ingredients (such as essential oils) added. You can typically find body wash bases on cosmetic ingredient websites.
Which essential oils should you put in before you suds up? Two of our favorite pick-me-up essential oils include:
-
Energy Boost synergy blend – Combining uplifting Black Pepper and Lemon with grounding Sandalwood, Energy Boost helps you fuel your inner fire while feeling deeply rooted.
-
Stay Alert synergy blend – Still feeling tired after rolling out of bed? Reach for fresh, invigorating Stay Alert. This aroma combines Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Pine and Lavender essential oil for a clean, energizing effect.
Nourish Your Hair With EO Shampoo & Conditioner
Body wash or shower gel isn’t the only bathroom product that benefits from an added essential oil boost.
Essential oils can help to improve your mood and nourish your locks. Some of our favorite oils for hair include:
-
Tea Tree
-
Basil
-
Cedarwood Atlas
Don’t worry—they won’t leave your hair looking oily. Simply add 6 drops per 1 oz of unscented shampoo or conditioner, rinse and go!
Diffuse Essential Oils
Ever use a shower diffuser? It’s also quick and easy to create a spa-grade experience at home by diffusing essential oils in the shower.
A soothing oil like fresh, lemony Exhale synergy blend or the floral Chamomile Lavender synergy blend can turn your shower into a private oasis where stress melts away. The perfect synergy blend will elevate your "shower diffuser" experience!
You obviously can’t drag your diffuser into the shower—but there are plenty of clever tricks for getting essential oils’ vapors circulating in your bathroom. Try out the following methods:
-
Steam cup – Fill a cup with an ounce of warm water and 6 drops of your chosen essential oil. Place the steam cup on the side of the tub or in your shower caddy. As it heats up, shower steam should circulate the aroma from the cup.
-
Washcloth – Alternately, put a few drops of oil on a wet washcloth and place it in your shower caddy or tie it around your faucet. The aromas will waft up.
-
Tea ball – Fill a tea ball ½ full with Epsom salt and add a few drops of essential oil. Hang it from your shower caddy and wait for the steam to release your chosen oil.
-
Shower floor – You can also simply stop your shower drain and place a few drops of oil directly on the floor of the shower. Just be sure to open the drain before your feet start to prune!
After-Shower Care
After you’ve enjoyed a luxurious aromatic escape, prolong its effects as you moisturize your body and clean your tub or shower stall.
Do you already moisturize after your hot shower? You probably know that it’s hard to apply lotion to damp skin. However, it’s easy to apply a natural body oil, which can actually help seal in the dampness and prevent trans-epdiermal water loss (TEWL).
With an added boost from essential oils, you can transform your carrier oil into a potion that helps with stretch marks, can help reduce inflammation or simply allows you to feel more grounded as you start your day.
Ready to get started? Just:
-
Add 6 drops essential oil per 1oz of carrier oil
-
Dry off after your shower
-
Apply your new body oil to damp skin

Hi Kathy! You can use almost any body wash for this recipe, though a body wash base is preferred. You can purchase one from a cosmetic ingredient supply shop online.

Hi Jacquie! Almost all plants are only capable of being distilled once, therefore almost all essential oils on the market are distilled once–no matter the brand.

I would love for Edens Garden to develop a body oil or roll on blend of ginger and cardamom. I have one from Bath and Body works that I love, but I dont trust their ingredients.
I’d also love a spray on mist for refreshing the skin/face.
I love Edens Garden!!!

You recommend using a body wash base that’s meant for adding additional ingredients. I’m new to essential oils so what am I looking for in the ingredient list?

How many times are your essential oils distilled? I know young living is 1 time distilled. I was just wondering what edens garden was. Thanks.

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas for essential oils use. I first got interested in essential oils about 10 years ago but am just now discovering all the wonderful uses and benefits beyond just diffusing .
