AAA: Can Essential Oils Promote Hair Growth?

It can be said that we’ve missed the salon these last couple of months. Not sure about those reading this, but our hair was in need of some TLC. So we started some research, grabbed our EOs, and got to work. Essential oils might not have the capacity to color or perm your hair but how do they perform when it comes to hair growth? Read on to learn what we discovered.

Turns out essential oils and hair go hand-in-hand. Aromatherapist, Robert Tisserand collected research showing that a 1% dilution of Rosemary essential oil out-performed a 2% dilution of minoxidil (of which, Rogaine is a common brand). A separate study showed that a 3% dilution of Peppermint essential oil improved the appearance of hair growth better than minoxidil. Similarly, Lavender alone along with a blend of Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood diluted in Jojoba and Grapeseed were found to dramatically enhance hair growth. In other words, the research is conclusive on essential oil’s benefits towards hair growth.

But how is this possible? Two of the above studies purport that both Rosemary and Peppermint EO was able to promote hair growth by stimulating the scalp and increasing blood circulation to hair follicles. This may also be why caffeine, a constituent found in Coffee, is a known hair-growth stimulant. With this information, it may be worth testing other EOs known to increase circulation for hair growth as well such as Cypress, Geranium, and Juniper Berry. But for now, we’ve decided to stick to what we know works and create our own blend for hair growth. If our manes aren’t the only ones that could use a little TLC, pick up this helpful recipe below –

Daily Mane-tenance

5 drops Rosemary Around The World oil

4 drops Peppermint Around The World oil

3 drops Lavender Around The World oil

1 tbsp Jojoba carrier oil

1 tbsp Grapeseed carrier oil

30 ml empty amber glass bottle

Combine all ingredients in your empty bottle. Massage a small amount of oil onto your clean scalp 1-2 times per day every day for four weeks or until desired results are achieved. A skin patch test is recommended before applying the blend to your scalp. Note, your hair/ scalp may be oily after application. If applying at night, a hair cap is recommended.

We suggest the Around The World oils as they each contain a combination of the same oil but from different origins (i.e. Rosemary from Morocco, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, and Corsica). This results in a powerful synergy that offers heightened therapeutic benefits. So much so that we’ve developed two blends specifically for Hair Love and Healthy Scalp using many of these ingredients.

Hi Deborah! You can use it as a prewash hair serum by combining 12 drops with 1 oz of carrier oil. Massage the oil into your scalp 20- 60 minutes prior to washing your hair.

You can also add 12 drops per 1 oz of shampoo or conditioner. When washing or conditioning your hair, pay special attention to massaging it into your scalp and leaving it for at least 20 minutes.

The directions for hair love are very vague. Do I use with a carrier oil? Which one? Do I leave on for an hour? Two? Do I wash out?

Hi Pam! Yes, you can shampoo afterward. We recommend leaving the oil for at least 20-30 minutes before washing it out.

Thank you for this information but do you shampoo after massaging the oils daily. Four weeks without shampoo is too long!!

Hi,
Is it possible to use either jojoba or grapeseed carrier oil?

Hi Bonnie! Thank you for your feedback, and to answer your question, you could use 2 tbsp of one of the carrier oils mentioned.

Why do you need 2 carrier oils for this blend? I wish you would sell it already put together.
